In case you guys didn't know, I'm mixed. 50% Chinese, 25% Italian, 25% other white races that are too negligible for me to care about, and 100% aWeSoMe. (Nah, just kidding... this is what happens to me when I get 5 hours of sleep every night for a week.) All in all, this makes up for a pretty interesting family tree, to say the least.
My great-grandfather on my dad's side moved to America after a famine struck Italy in early 1900s. They raised my grandpa, who later met my grandma and got married. They raised my father and his 4 siblings together. They were a fairly normal family who lived normal lives in Detroit, Michigan.
My mom's side is a little more confusing. My great-great grandfather temporarily moved away from his children and wife to study medicine in Japan. As a single mother in China long before the women's rights movement, my great-great grandmother struggled to survive and support her children. Left with no other option, she was forced to give away her children to another family. Later, my great-great grandfather, her husband, returned back to China as a rich doctor. They were able to get back their children and raise them. Later, my great-great grandfather married a second wife, as was customary back in the day, so I probably have a large extended family in China that I don't even know about. My great-grandfather was a commander in the Nationalist Army fighting against the Communist government during the revolution in China. His men and he were outnumbered and about to fight when the opposing army told them that they would spare their lives if they surrendered. In order to protect his men, my great-grandfather surrendered. His soldiers went back to their families, and he was given a high ranking position in a police station as a reward. However, this was all a ruse in order to take away his power and protection. As my great-grandfather began to hear rumors that he was going to be arrested, he resigned and decided to move away to the countryside in order to peacefully live out the rest of his life. However, the Communist army was waiting there and took him to jail. He died of "natural causes" a week later in the Communist jail. My grandfather and grandmother lived pretty average lives and raised my mom along with her 3 siblings. My mom moved to America in her 20s, where she met my dad.
And the rest is, well, history.
