I think the idea behind this week's blog post is pretty interesting... in today's society, we're not exactly taught to brag about our talents. It's always about being humble, and if you do brag, you do so subtlety. Then again, I could totally be making this up, but this is the way it's always been in my family. It also probably has to do with my low self esteem and all, but I think it's pretty good to think about all the things you're good at once in a while. So here's my little pat on the back.
First of all are some abilities that I'm pretty proud of. I'm a decent writer, being into journalism and creative writing and all, and that's always been a source of pride for me. You can always memorize formulas for math, but it's hard to memorize "formulas" for writing good novels or English essays. I've been working on this ever since I was five years old, and I've definitely improved over the years (I mean, I would hope so, considering that I've been writing for a decade now). I'm also decent at playing piano. I've gotten my fair share of awards, and I'm eternally grateful to my amazing teacher Werner Rose. He really shows me the beauty and history behind music, unlike typical teachers who just scream at you to play the right note (although he does that fairly often as well :) ).
I've also got some character traits that I'm pretty proud of. I try to be nice to everyone, even if I don't really like them. This can sometimes backfire, but I'm proud of the way that I can hold my cool in tough situations and keep my calm exterior up. I'm also a really good listener. A lot of my friends (and like acquaintances) come to me to ask me questions, and I'm always happy to help a homie out. So if you need a shoulder to cry on, I'm here for you. I'm also a perceptive person; I'm really good at looking at people and empathizing with them and figuring out what their feelings are. So you know that one friend who everyone asks for relationship advice even though they've never bee in a relationship? Yup, thanks to that perception, that's me. (Which is great and all except whenever I manage to be clueless to anything happening that has to do with me.)
Overall, I think it's a good self-esteem booster to look at your accomplishments and sources of pride every once in a while. After a hard week, it's nice to know that you aren't as lame as what you think you are...
